My Top 10 Must-Have Tools
As a self-taught DIYer and mom who builds during nap times and late nights, I’ve learned that having the right tools makes all the difference. When I first started, I was overwhelmed walking through the tool aisles — but over time, these ten tools have become my must-haves for every project I tackle. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to grow your collection, here’s why each of these earns a permanent spot in my workshop!
1. Miter Saw
If I had to choose one tool that completely changed the game for me, it would be the miter saw. It was one of the very first tools I ever purchased and opened the door to so many beginner-friendly projects around my home. As I grew more confident using it, I started pushing my limits — experimenting with angled cuts and tackling more advanced builds. From trim work and board and batten to box molding and playroom projects, my miter saw delivers clean, precise cuts every single time. It’s truly a must-have, especially for beginners once you get comfortable with it!
2. Drill
This tool is the true MVP of DIY. I use my drill on every single project — whether it’s pre-drilling holes for screws, assembling furniture, or hanging shelves. It’s the one tool I always keep charged and ready to go.
3. Speed Square
The speed square is small but mighty. It helps ensure all my cuts are perfectly straight or angled just right. Think of this little tool as an extra set of eyes for accuracy!
4. Circular Saw
Before I added a table saw to my collection, my circular saw was my go-to tool. It’s lightweight, portable, and perfect for breaking down large sheets of plywood or trimming boards right on-site. Even now, I still reach for it often when I need quick, long cuts that my miter saw just can’t handle.
5. Brad Nailer
Once I discovered the brad nailer, my projects instantly looked more professional. It makes attaching trim, molding, or small wood pieces so much easier (and faster!). Plus, it saves me from hammering a million tiny nails by hand.
6. Safety Glasses
Safety might not sound exciting, but trust me — it’s essential. I learned early on that sawdust and flying debris can be sneaky. A good pair of safety glasses lets me focus on creating without worrying about my eyes.
7. Sander
There’s nothing more satisfying than running your hand over a silky-smooth surface you sanded yourself. Whether I’m refinishing furniture or prepping wood for paint, my sander helps give every piece that polished, professional finish.
8. Fractional Tape Measure
I used to struggle with measurements until I found a fractional tape measure. It literally spells out the fractions for you, which is a game changer when you’re learning. Now I can measure quickly and confidently without second-guessing myself.
9. Drill Bits & Screw Bits
A good set of drill and screw bits keeps me moving through projects without frustration. Different screws, different materials — these bits are like the puzzle pieces that make every project fit together perfectly.
10. Level
A level keeps everything… well, level! From hanging wall decor to installing cabinets, it ensures everything looks straight and intentional. There’s nothing worse than stepping back to admire your work only to realize it’s crooked!
