4 Decorating Tips I Wish I Knew Sooner

Last year I dropped the ball. As a mom of a 6 year old and a new(ish) baby, I had zeroooo in me to decorate. Honestly, we were in the thick of it last November and it was a really hard season for us. Angelina was gearing up for a long-awaited surgery. Luca was ten months and he was on week 12 of a double ear infection, also awaiting surgery. He was still up multiple times a night and Tommy and I were beat tired. On top of it we had our first Disney vacation booked at the end of November and it was not magical in the slightest (I’ll save that story for another day)!

So, as you can imagine I just didn’t have it in me last year. Well, this year I am ready for my redemption! And I am decorating this house in a whole new way. I am bringing in new decor items, new design ideas and I am sharing all these tips with you! So, let’s get started!

Tip One: Buy Oversized

When you purchase greenery try to spend a few dollars more for an oversized look. This is going to capture a more luxurious look rather than a small-scale item that kind of falls flat. For example, you could buy one of those small $5 Christmas trees for your counter but imagine spending $12 on a few large faux cedar stems for a grander look. That small scale item just isn’t going to give that grand wow factor. Also, think about oversized for wreaths or table counter items too. The larger, within reason for your space, the better! The smaller items just seem to get lost!

Tip Two: Balance The oven is such a great example of how I like to balance my space. You can see on one side I have a heavy weighted single item. This ceramic vase paired with the faux stems is pretty large and grand. Then on the other side I have more items but on a smaller scale. This helps to balance the space evenly.

Tip Three: 3 Staggered items

I love to group my settings with three different staggered items. What I mean by this is that when you pick out three items, I want you to try and find three different heights to pair together. Also, think about the colors of those items all sitting next to each other. Here are some examples of pairing three items, all different heights and making sure the colors blend nicely.

Tip Four:  Consistency
If you are planning on bringing in greenery, try to stick with 1-2 kinds of greenery. This year I have faux cedar and flock. I really like seeing the consistency in the same deep green cedar coloring throughout the space paired with the contrasting white flock. The two do not compete in colors and complement each other very nicely.

I hope these simple tips help you to decorate your space this holiday season! Have fun with trying new things and remember scale can make or break your look. Go big or go home!!

Until next time, happy decorating!
